Why Veterans Seek
Acupuncture

Many veterans live with the long-term effects of physically demanding service. Years of heavy training, repetitive strain, injuries, and high-stress environments can leave the body carrying pain and tension long after active duty ends.

By the time many veterans find acupuncture, they’ve often already tried medications, injections, surgery, or physical therapy without lasting relief. If you’ve been living with pain or sleep disruption for years, it can start to feel like that’s just the way things are.

You don’t have to live with pain.

Acupuncture offers a structured, drug-free approach that helps regulate the nervous system, reduce pain signaling, and support recovery when the body has been under long-term strain.

An honest conversation, no pressure.

VA Community Care & Referrals

Some veterans receive acupuncture treatments through the VA Community Care Network when authorized by the Department of Veterans Affairs.

If you already have a VA referral or authorization for acupuncture, our clinic can help coordinate scheduling and provide the documentation and treatment summaries required for Community Care visits.

If you are unsure whether you qualify for VA coverage or have questions about documentation, we recommend speaking with your VA primary care provider or care coordinator.

Private appointments

Some veterans choose to start care directly without waiting for VA authorization. If you later receive Community Care approval, we can help you transition your care.

If you’re unsure which path applies to you, call us, and we can help you understand your options.

What to Expect from Treatment

Your first visit includes a 60–90 minute consultation where we review your symptoms, health history, and goals.

Dr. Christopher will recommend a treatment plan, and if you choose to proceed, your first acupuncture session may begin the same day.Treatment options are explained before anything begins, and you remain in control throughout the session.

Acupuncture sessions typically last 25–60 minutes.

Veterans receiving acupuncture often experience benefits such as:

  • Reduced pain intensity

  • Improved sleep quality

  • Decreased muscle tension

  • Better stress regulation

  • Improved range of motion

  • Improved physical recovery and resilience

  • Overall improved quality of life

Many veterans notice subtle but meaningful improvements within the first few visits, with cumulative progress over time. Our goal is steady, functional improvement that helps you move, sleep, and live more comfortably.

“I had never had acupuncture before. But, when you’ve tried everything else to no avail, you’ll start throwing everything at the problem and hope that something will work. What worked for me was Dr Christopher Johnson. Not only does he have a deep, personal understanding about Chinese medicine, he also has great empathy, determination and confidence about what he is able to offer. He has changed my life by relieving my pain and providing me with a new sense of normal.”

FAQs

Learn more about our acupuncture services or call us to find answers to your questions.

Does the VA cover acupuncture?

The Department of Veterans Affairs includes acupuncture within its Whole Health model for integrative pain care. Coverage typically requires authorization through VA Community Care. If you are a veteran you should speak with your VA provider or care coordinator to determine eligibility.

How much does the VA pay for acupuncture?

Coverage amounts typically vary depending on authorization and Community Care arrangements. Your VA care coordinator can provide details about approved visits and reimbursement structure.

Do I need a referral?

If you plan to use VA benefits, authorization is required. If paying privately, a referral is not necessary.

How many sessions will I need?

The number of sessions recommended depends on the condition being treated and your goals. Many veterans begin with an initial trial plan and adjust treatment based on response.

Is acupuncture safe?

Acupuncture is very safe when performed by a licensed practitioner. We use sterile, single-use needles and adjust positioning and treatment techniques to ensure comfort.
