The Benefits of Medical Acupuncture
Acupuncture offers a non-surgical, low-intervention option that can often be used alongside medical care. For some people, it may help reduce or even eliminate reliance on medications over time.
Research and clinical experience have shown that medical acupuncture may support nervous system regulation and circulation, and encourage the body’s natural functions and healing processes.
Many of our patients begin to notice early shifts within the first few sessions. Over time, our patients often experience:
-
Reduced pain and inflammation
-
Improved nervous system regulation and stress resilience
-
Better sleep quality, energy, and recovery
-
Improved circulation and tissue healing
-
Greater comfort and ease of movement
-
Support for hormonal and reproductive system function
-
Calmer digestion and gut comfort
-
Increased overall functional balance and stability

Dr. Christopher Johnson
Licensed Acupuncturist | Doctor of Chinese Medicine | Master of Acupuncture
Dr. Christopher Johnson found acupuncture the same way many patients do – by needing it. After years of living with chronic pain and mental fog, he tried acupuncture and experienced meaningful relief for the first time. His pain eased, his focus came back, and his memory sharpened in a way he hadn’t felt in over a decade. It was enough to change everything for him.
Today, Dr. Chris brings both lived experience and advanced clinical training to his work as a Licensed Acupuncturist and Doctor of Chinese Medicine with advanced training in chronic pain, complex conditions, and reproductive health. His style is calm, honest, and down-to-earth.
As a patient, you can expect to be taken seriously, treated as an individual rather than a diagnosis, and guided through care that prioritizes your safety, clarity, and real progress.

Acupuncture FAQs
How does Acupuncture work?
Acupuncture works by stimulating specific acupuncture points on the body. During treatment, thin needles are inserted at selected points to support nervous system regulation, circulation, and the body’s natural healing responses. Treatments are individualized and designed to support whole-body balance rather than focus on a single symptom.
How often should you get acupuncture?
Frequency depends on your condition, how long symptoms have been present, and how your body responds. Many patients begin with weekly sessions, then space visits out as stability improves. Chronic conditions often require consistency to create lasting change. Schedule your consultation to find out what we recommend for you.
How long do acupuncture sessions last?
Most sessions last between 25 and 60 minutes depending on what's necessary for treating your specific condition. Initial consultations are longer (60-90 minutes) to allow time for assessment and discussion. Follow-up visits focus on treatment and progress.
How deep do acupuncture needles go?
Needle depth varies by area and purpose, but is generally shallow. Acupuncture needles are extremely thin and designed for precise, gentle stimulation. If you feel anything at all, it will be more like a mosquito bite than anything else.
Should acupuncture be painful?
Acupuncture is gentle and should not be painful. Most people find it relaxing, and some even fall asleep. Some people may experience mild side effects such as temporary soreness, light bruising, or fatigue after treatment. These effects are usually short-lived. Serious side effects are rare. We adjust treatment based on your comfort level.
How do I prepare for an acupuncture session?
Eat a light meal beforehand, stay hydrated, and avoid intense exercise just before your appointment. Bring any relevant medical information or questions you’d like to discuss.
What do i wear an acupuncture session?
Loose, comfortable clothing works best. We commonly access points on the arms, legs, abdomen, and back while maintaining privacy and comfort.
Is acupuncture covered by insurance?
Coverage varies by plan and some patients use insurance, HSA, or FSA funds. It’s best to check with your healthcare provider and plan to verify that acupuncture for your condition is covered. At your initial appointment, we will happily provide a courtesy check to your insurance provider.
What’s the difference between dry needling vs acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a complete medical system rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Dry needling focuses on muscular trigger points. While the tools may look similar, the methods and goals are different. Dr. Christopher is the only therapist in the Greater Minneapolis/St Paul area who has extensive training in both dry needling and orthopedic acupuncture. We can discuss if dry needling is right for you during your consultation.
What is electroacupuncture?
Electroacupuncture uses a gentle electrical current between needles to enhance stimulation. We often use it for pain relief, nerve-related conditions, and recovery support. During your consultation, Dr. Christopher will let you know if electroacupuncture might be right for you.
